Was your WhatsApp account blocked? A guide for businesses and how to appeal

If your WhatsApp account was blocked in recent weeks, you are not alone. Thousands of users in Ecuador, Colombia, Peru and other parts of the world reported that, for no apparent reason, they received the message when opening the app: "This account cannot use WhatsApp". The platform, owned by Meta, says its systems show no alteration.

Why WhatsApp blocks accounts

WhatsApp only blocks accounts when it considers that their activity violates its terms of service, for example if they engage in spam, fraud or put other users' safety at risk. The company recommends reading the "Acceptable use of our services" section to understand what uses are appropriate. In practice, mistaken blocks happen more often than admitted —especially when personal accounts are used for mass messaging to customers.

What to do if your account is blocked

The appeal process is simple but has clear rules:

  1. Tap "Request a review" inside the app.
  2. Wait for WhatsApp's notification once your account is reviewed. With so many requests, it may take time.
  3. One appeal per number: the app can only review one phone number per appeal.
  4. No review option = permanent block. If you don't see the option to request a review, the block is permanent and cannot be appealed.
  5. Don't use side channels. Contacting WhatsApp outside the review process —or through someone else's account— will not speed up or influence the decision.

Recommendations for businesses

For an SME, losing its WhatsApp number can mean losing contact with long-time customers. It is worth preparing before it happens:

  • Use WhatsApp Business and the official API. Business accounts have limits and tools designed for customer communication, and the official API with approved templates avoids the most common reasons for blocking (unsolicited or mass messages).
  • Don't put all eggs in one basket. If your business depends on WhatsApp, keep an alternative contact channel —email, web form or social media— and publish it on your site and profiles.
  • Back up what matters. Periodically export chats with relevant information and keep your customer data in your own CRM or database, not only inside the app.
  • Train your team on usage limits so you don't trigger anti-spam systems.
