Tech communities in Quito: a guide to joining and growing

People chatting at a technology meetup in Quito

If you work in technology in Quito, you may feel like you are learning alone, in front of a screen, fixing bugs at midnight. The good news is that the city has an increasingly lively ecosystem of tech communities, where hundreds of people gather to share knowledge without charging a cent. This guide explains why it is worth joining, how to find these communities and what to expect when you attend your first meetup.

Why join a community

A community is not just a place to listen to talks. It is a network of people who face the same challenges you do and who are willing to share what they know. The benefits add up over time:

  • Continuous learning: you get access to topics and tools that rarely reach a traditional classroom, explained by people who already use them in production.
  • Networking: you meet peers, tech leads and recruiters in a relaxed setting, without the pressure of an interview.
  • Job opportunities: many openings in Quito circulate first in community channels before they are posted publicly.
  • Mentorship: finding someone a step ahead who can guide you can save you months of trial and error.

Real communities you can look for in Quito

These are well-known, long-standing communities. We deliberately do not include specific dates, because they change often; below we explain how to confirm them.

Development and languages

  • GDG Quito (Google Developer Groups): one of the most active communities, focused on Google technologies and development in general. It organizes the well-known DevFest Ecuador every year.
  • Python Ecuador and the Python meetups in Quito: ideal if you work with data, backend or automation.
  • R-Ladies Quito: a local chapter that promotes gender diversity in data science and R programming, with open events.

Artificial intelligence, data and security

  • Artificial intelligence communities that run talks, workshops and bootcamps to bring AI closer to students and professionals.
  • OWASP Quito: the local chapter dedicated to cybersecurity and secure software development.

Universities and coworkings

Several universities such as USFQ, EPN and PUCE, together with coworking spaces around the city, open their doors to talks and hackathons. Following their academic agendas often reveals high-quality free activities.

How to find them and stay up to date

Important: meetups change date, format and venue frequently, and some communities pause their activity for seasons. Do not rely on a fixed calendar or on this list to learn exact dates.

  • Search each community on Meetup and turn on notifications.
  • Follow their official social media, where they usually announce upcoming gatherings.
  • Always confirm on each community official channels before attending; that is where you will find the real date, time and place.

What to expect at your first meetup

Most meetups are informal and welcoming. There will be one or two talks, time for questions and almost always a moment for networking. You do not need to be an expert: arrive with curiosity, wonder who is next to you and do not be afraid to introduce yourself. A simple tip: write down one specific question and look for someone who can help with it. Leaving with one new contact is already a big win.

How we approach it at SimCodec

As an Ecuadorian company, we know that the country technical talent grows when we share what we learn. Taking part in communities does not just improve individual skills: it strengthens the entire Quito ecosystem. That is why we encourage our team and those who work with us to attend, to propose talks and to give back part of what they receive.

So, which community will be the first you join this month? Check their official channels, mark a gathering on your calendar and tell us how it went.
